Private Coil Removal in Guildford
Book a private appointment with Dr Sarah Mahmoud for removal of a copper coil or hormonal coil. Your appointment includes an assessment, discussion of your plans and routine removal where clinically appropriate.
£195 — assessment and routine coil removal
Female clinician · No GP referral required · Central Guildford
Considering having your coil removed?
You may want your coil removed because you are planning a pregnancy, changing contraception, experiencing side effects or no longer need it.
Dr Sarah Mahmoud can assess and remove copper coils (IUDs) and hormonal coils (IUSs), including Mirena. You can discuss your concerns and the next steps before deciding whether to proceed.
What does the £195 appointment include?
-
Assessment of your medical history and reason for removal.
-
Discussion of pregnancy plans or ongoing contraception.
-
Examination and routine coil removal where appropriate.
-
Explanation of aftercare and any recommended next steps.
-
Tests, medication, replacement devices and specialist investigations are not included. Any additional costs will be explained before you agree to proceed.
-
Routine removal means the coil can be removed using its threads without specialist retrieval techniques. If removal is more complex, Sarah will explain the findings and the appropriate next steps.
What happens during coil removal?
Dr Mahmoud will first discuss your history, symptoms and contraception needs. With your consent, she will examine you using a speculum to see the cervix and locate the coil threads.
For a straightforward removal, the threads are gently held and the coil is withdrawn. You may experience brief cramping or discomfort. The procedure itself is usually short, although your appointment also allows time for assessment and advice.
You can ask questions, request a pause or stop the examination at any time.
Before your appointment
If you do not want to become pregnant, use condoms or avoid vaginal sex for the seven days before removal.
Contact us beforehand if you use another contraceptive method so we can advise on your individual circumstances.
If you have had sex without a condom in the previous seven days and do not want to become pregnant, contact the clinic before attending. Removal may need to be delayed.
Please tell us when booking if:
-
You have been told that your coil threads are not visible.
-
A previous removal attempt was unsuccessful.
-
You think you may be pregnant.
-
You have significant pelvic pain, unusual bleeding or other symptoms.
Bring any information you have about the type of coil and when it was fitted.

Frequently asked questions
Can you remove both copper and hormonal coils?
Yes. Sarah can assess and remove copper IUDs and hormonal IUSs. Routine removal depends on the examination findings and whether the threads can be accessed.
Do I need a separate consultation first?
For a routine removal, assessment and removal are included in the £195 appointment. If you have been told the removal may be difficult, contact us before booking so we can advise on the appropriate appointment.
What if the threads are missing or removal is difficult?
Please contact us before booking. An ultrasound or specialist removal may be needed. This routine-removal appointment does not include ultrasound-guided retrieval or hysteroscopy.
Is removal painful?
Some people experience brief cramping or discomfort. Sarah will explain the procedure and discuss any concerns before proceeding. You can ask to pause or stop.
Can I become pregnant after removal?
Pregnancy can occur soon after a copper or hormonal coil is removed. If you do not want to become pregnant, plan your ongoing contraception before removal.
Can I have a new coil fitted at the same appointment?
Please contact us to discuss replacement and current fitting availability. A replacement coil is not included in the £195 removal fee.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact the clinic directly to arrange an appointment.
