Why do kidney stones keep coming back?

Kidney stones can have different compositions and contributing factors. The most useful prevention advice depends on your individual history and findings.

A metabolic assessment looks at the way substances in your blood and urine may contribute to stone formation. It also considers relevant medical conditions, medicines, supplements, diet and fluid intake.

Where appropriate, identifying a contributing factor may allow more targeted advice or treatment.

An assessment cannot guarantee that you will never develop another stone. Its purpose is to investigate relevant factors and develop an informed approach to reducing recurrence risk.

What is a metabolic kidney stone assessment?

Bringing your history and results together

Dr Mirzazadeh will review the information available about your previous stone episodes and their treatment.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include:

  • How often stones have occurred.

  • Previous stone analysis reports.

  • Relevant ultrasound or CT scan reports.

  • Blood and urine test results.

  • Your medical and family history.

  • Current medicines and supplements.

  • Relevant dietary habits and usual fluid intake.

Further investigations may be recommended where they would help clarify your risk factors or guide management.

Not every patient needs the same tests. Your investigation plan will depend on your history and existing results.

Blood tests, urine tests and stone analysis

Investigations selected for your circumstances

If further assessment is appropriate, Dr Mirzazadeh may recommend blood tests, urine tests or review of stone composition.

Blood tests can help assess relevant factors such as kidney function and calcium metabolism. More detailed urine testing, including a timed collection, may be appropriate for selected patients.

If a previous stone has been analysed, the report can provide useful information. Please bring it if available.

Tests are not included in the consultation fee. Our team will explain arrangements and costs before you agree to proceed.

Please do not arrange additional tests or collect samples yourself unless advised to do so.

A personalised kidney stone prevention plan

Following assessment, Dr Mirzazadeh can explain the findings and discuss recommendations relevant to you.

Your plan may include:

  • Advice about fluid intake suited to your health needs.

  • Dietary guidance informed by your history and stone type, where known.

  • Review of medicines or supplements that may be relevant.

  • Treatment of identified metabolic abnormalities where appropriate.

  • Discussion of preventive medication when clinically suitable.

  • Advice on monitoring and follow-up.

Bring details of any existing dietary restrictions or fluid limits. Recommendations should take account of other medical conditions and advice you have already received.

Have you already had a stone removed?

Prevention advice after your immediate treatment

Removing or passing a stone addresses that episode, but you may still have questions about the likelihood of another stone.

A metabolic consultation can focus on factors contributing to recurrence and appropriate preventive measures.

It can complement your urology care. Any existing advice about remaining stones, obstruction, procedures or follow-up imaging should continue to be followed.

Metabolic medicine and urology: which service do you need?

This metabolic medicine clinic focuses on:

  • Investigating contributing metabolic factors.

  • Reviewing relevant blood, urine and stone analysis results.

  • Discussing prevention and medical management.

A urology service may be needed for:

  • Assessment of a stone requiring removal.

  • Procedures such as lithotripsy or surgery.

  • Management of obstruction or other structural urinary tract problems.

If you are unsure which service you need, contact our team before booking.
