Choosing the right coil for you
A coil provides long-acting, reversible contraception without needing to remember a daily pill. Sarah will discuss your medical history, preferences and bleeding pattern to help you choose a suitable option.
Copper coil — IUD
A copper coil is a hormone-free contraceptive placed inside the womb. It works immediately after fitting. How long it lasts depends on the device.
It may suit someone who prefers contraception without hormones. Periods can become heavier, longer or more painful, particularly in the first few months.
Hormonal coil — IUS
A hormonal coil releases progestogen inside the womb. It can make periods lighter, although irregular bleeding or spotting can occur, especially initially.
The appropriate device depends on your circumstances. Some hormonal coils also have uses for heavy menstrual bleeding or as part of HRT; these require an individual assessment.
Neither type of coil protects against sexually transmitted infections.
What happens at your appointment?
-
Sarah will review your medical history, current contraception and any possibility of pregnancy. She will discuss the procedure, pain management, possible complications and alternatives before asking for your consent.
-
During fitting, a speculum is used to view the cervix and the coil is placed inside the womb. The fitting itself is usually brief, but the appointment also allows time for assessment, discussion and recovery.
-
You can ask questions, request a pause or stop the procedure at any time.
Pain relief and your comfort
Coil fitting can be painful, and experiences vary. Tell us beforehand if you are worried about pain, have had a difficult fitting or examination previously, or would like additional support.
Contact the clinic to discuss the pain-relief options available for your appointment. Sarah will explain these before you decide to proceed.
Preparing for coil fitting
Contact us before your appointment for advice based on your current contraception, menstrual cycle and recent sexual activity.
-
Continue your usual contraception unless a clinician advises otherwise.
-
Tell us if you have had sex without reliable contraception or think you could be pregnant.
-
Tell us about pelvic pain, unusual discharge, unexplained bleeding or a recent STI diagnosis.
-
Let us know about any previous difficult coil fitting.
-
Tell us if an existing coil needs removing.
A pregnancy test may be needed, but a negative test cannot always exclude a very recent pregnancy. Fitting may need to be postponed if pregnancy cannot be reasonably excluded.
After your coil is fitted
You may experience cramping and spotting after fitting. Sarah will explain what to expect, how to check the threads and when to seek help.
A copper coil provides contraception immediately. After hormonal coil fitting, additional contraception may be needed for seven days; Sarah will give advice for your circumstances.
Seek urgent medical advice for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, very heavy bleeding or suspected pregnancy. If you cannot feel the threads, use additional contraception and contact a clinician promptly, as emergency contraception may be needed.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate £195 consultation first?
The fitting package includes the assessment needed for a routine fitting. If your circumstances require a separate appointment or further investigations, we will explain this and any additional costs before you book.
Can I choose a copper or hormonal coil?
Yes, subject to clinical suitability and device availability. Sarah will help you compare the options. Contact us if you have a particular device in mind.
Do you offer Mirena coil fitting?
Please contact us to confirm current Mirena availability and suitability. We will confirm the device and total price before arranging your appointment.
Can I have a coil fitted if I have never been pregnant?
Having never been pregnant does not automatically rule out a coil. Sarah will assess your suitability and discuss the procedure with you.
Can you remove and replace my existing coil?
Sarah can assess you for removal and replacement. Contact us before booking so we can confirm preparation, appointment requirements and the inclusive price.
What if fitting cannot be completed?
Sarah will explain why fitting cannot proceed and discuss alternatives or referral where appropriate. The clinic will explain the applicable charges before your appointment.
Can I book without a GP referral?
Yes. You can contact the clinic directly.
Is this an emergency contraception appointment?
This page is for planned coil fitting. If you need emergency contraception, seek advice promptly from an NHS sexual health service, pharmacist or NHS 111. Do not wait for a routine enquiry response.
