Recently diagnosed with osteoporosis?

Make sense of your results and your next steps

An osteoporosis diagnosis can leave you wondering how fragile your bones are, whether everyday activities are safe and what treatment could help.

Your consultation provides an opportunity to review your scan findings alongside your medical history, previous fractures, medicines and other factors affecting bone health.

Dr Mirzazadeh can explain what the findings mean for you, discuss whether further investigations are appropriate and help you understand the available management options.

The aim is a clear, individual plan for protecting your bone health and reducing your risk of future fractures.

Osteopenia and low bone density

Understand whether monitoring or treatment is appropriate

Osteopenia means your bone density is lower than the normal range, but not low enough to fall within the osteoporosis range on a bone density scan.

It does not automatically mean you need medication. Decisions depend on your overall fracture risk, medical history and other relevant findings.

Dr Mirzazadeh can review your results in context and advise on appropriate monitoring, lifestyle measures and whether treatment should be considered.

Review your osteoporosis treatment

Specialist advice if treatment is difficult or your circumstances have changed

You may already be taking osteoporosis medication but have questions about side effects, how long to continue or whether your treatment is working.

A specialist review can consider:

  • Your current and previous medicines.

  • Side effects or difficulty following the treatment schedule.

  • Any fractures since treatment began.

  • Relevant scan and blood test results.

  • Changes in your health or other medication.

  • Whether your monitoring or treatment plan needs adjustment.

Dr Mirzazadeh will discuss options appropriate to your individual circumstances. If a treatment requires delivery through another service, the arrangements and costs will need to be established separately.

Please seek advice before stopping or delaying prescribed osteoporosis medication.

What happens during an osteoporosis consultation?

Review your history

Dr Mirzazadeh will discuss your concerns, previous fractures, medical conditions, family history and medicines, including supplements.

Understand your results and fracture risk

Where available, he will review your DEXA scan report and relevant blood results alongside your clinical history.

A bone density result is one part of the assessment. Your wider risk factors help guide decisions about treatment and monitoring.

Discuss your management options

Depending on your assessment, your plan may include advice about bone health, medication options, further investigations and follow-up.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and understand the reasons behind the recommendations.

Do I need a DEXA scan before booking?

If you already have a DEXA scan report, please provide it before your appointment where possible.

If you have not had a scan, contact our team before arranging one yourself. Dr Mirzazadeh can advise whether a scan or other investigation is appropriate.

This appointment is a specialist consultation. A DEXA scan is not included or performed as part of the consultation.

Any recommended scan or blood test is arranged separately, with costs explained before you proceed.

FAQ's

Who will I see for my osteoporosis consultation?

You will see Dr Mehdi Mirzazadeh, Consultant in Metabolic Medicine, advisory member of the National Osteoporosis Guidance Group and Clinical Lead for Metabolic Bone Disease at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.

What is the difference between osteoporosis and osteopenia?

Both relate to reduced bone density. Osteopenia describes bone density below the normal range but above the osteoporosis range.

Your risk of a fracture depends on more than the scan result alone. Your age, fracture history, medicines and other factors help guide decisions about management.

Can I book if I have osteopenia rather than osteoporosis?

Yes. Dr Mirzazadeh can review your bone density findings, relevant risk factors and medical history, then advise whether monitoring, lifestyle measures or treatment should be considered.

Can men have an osteoporosis consultation?

Yes. Osteoporosis affects men as well as women. The assessment considers your individual history, risk factors and results.

Can I attend if I have already started treatment?

Yes. You can request a review of your existing osteoporosis treatment, including concerns about side effects, further fractures or your ongoing management plan.

Is a DEXA scan included?

No. The consultation fee covers the specialist appointment. DEXA scans, blood tests and other investigations are charged separately where required.

If you already have a scan report, please provide it so it can be reviewed.

Do you provide osteoporosis injections or infusions at this appointment?

This booking is for specialist assessment and advice. It does not include an injection or infusion.

If an injectable treatment is recommended, its suitability, delivery arrangements and costs must be discussed separately.

Do I need a GP referral?

Contact our team and we will advise on the information needed for your appointment. If you are using insurance, check your insurer’s referral and authorisation requirements before attending.

How much does a private osteoporosis consultation cost?

An initial consultation with Dr Mirzazadeh is £300. A follow-up consultation is £225.

Scans, blood tests, medication and other treatments are charged separately where required.

When can I see Dr Mirzazadeh in Guildford?

Saturday consultations are available by prior arrangement. Please request an appointment at least two days in advance. The clinic will confirm availability and your booking.
